I was blind with affection, fear, and power. I felt powerful because I was needed. In reality, I had no power. I started writing this book when we were still full of hope. She was going to get better. I was going to Stanford and she was going to Berkeley—we had it all figured out.

When it became clear she wasn’t going to survive, I doubled down on the book. When she died, I became obsessed with publishing the book. My way of capturing her story and her life.
